Rameesa, Shawn & Liana

Alternative assessment is the direct opposite of the usual performance evaluation that is usually carried out in the form of a summary-test at the end of a topic or year to collect information about the children’s understanding of the subject.

Alternative assessment instead assesses the children’s understanding of mathematics by selecting pieces of work and compiling it over a period of time to evaluate their learning processes and outcomes. It can be in various forms such as portfolios, journals, observations to even self-assessment and surveys.

One of the advantages is that alternative assessment provides more authentic information about the child’s learning and understanding and also encourages the student to be involved in their assessment. Furthermore, teachers will also be able to improve on their mathematical instructions and able to identify ways to improve the child’s mathematical learning through alternative assessment.

1 specific example of alternative assessment will be Journal Writing.

Students will be asked to create a journal using an exercise book where they will be writing their progress and reflection throughout the chapter, while having access to previous entries.
The teacher will provide feedback and response to the entries to add value to the experience. Students will also be encouraged to review their past entries to monitor their learning.
Journal entries provides the teacher with an idea on how the students are progressing in their work and also opportunity to facilitate their development.

Example of contents of a P4: Area and Perimeter Journal

- Problems involving perimeter of rectangles and squares that I want to be able to solve

- How do I feel being able to solve the problem

- What are the steps/process I took to solve the problem

- Any discussions with my friends or teacher that let to my answer?

- Alternative solutions (if any)

- Will I still be able to understand and solve the problem if the question is re-phrased?
